Baito

Privacy policy

The short version: your scores, answers, marks, name and settings stay on your phone. We never receive them. The free version shows ads from Google, and if you buy or subscribe to Baito Pro, the purchase is handled by Apple and checked through RevenueCat.

Baito ("the app") is an app of unofficial Japanese practice tests and study lists for iPhone. This policy explains what happens to your information when you use it. There is no account, no sign-up, and no server of ours that holds your progress. Our only server sends the app new practice tests (see "Downloading tests" below).

Baito is unofficial practice. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), the Japan Foundation or JEES.

What stays on your phone

Everything you do in Baito is stored locally on your device, in the app's private storage: your test attempts and answers, the kanji and words you star or mark as known, the name you ask Baito to call you (if any), your level, your reminder time and your other settings.

We cannot see this data. It is never uploaded to us, and it is not shared with the ad or purchase services described below. It leaves your phone only when you choose to back it up or send a report, as described next.

Your iPhone's own iCloud or computer backup includes the app's data, under Apple's policies and your backup settings. If you delete Baito, the data on your phone is removed with it. We have no copy and cannot recover it for you, which is why the app offers iCloud backup and a backup file.

Automatic iCloud backup

If you are signed in to iCloud, Baito saves a copy of your progress, marks and a few settings to your own iCloud account, in a private area that belongs to the app. It is stored by Apple under Apple's privacy policy and your iCloud settings. We cannot see or open it. You can turn it off at any time in Baito's Settings, and delete it in the iPhone's Settings > your name > iCloud.

Downloading tests

The app comes with its first practice tests built in. Later tests download from our server, api.baitojapanese.com, run on Cloudflare. To give each phone its fair daily number of downloads, each request carries:

The server records which tests each ID downloaded on which day, and deletes these records after 35 days. Like any web server, Cloudflare sees your IP address to deliver the request and to block abuse; we do not store it. Your answers, scores and settings are never sent to the server.

Backup files you export yourself

Baito can export your progress, marks and a few settings (including your name, if you set one) to a backup file. This happens only when you choose to do it.

iOS hands the file to you through the standard share sheet, and you decide where it goes, for example Files, iCloud Drive, AirDrop or an email to yourself. Once you send it somewhere, that destination's own privacy policy applies to it. The app does not upload the file anywhere, and we never receive it.

Importing a backup reads the file you pick and adds its progress to what is already on your phone.

Reports and feedback you email us

Report a problem (under questions, kanji and words) and Write feedback (in About) open your own mail app with an email already filled in. You see the whole message, including the address you send it from, and nothing is sent unless you tap Send. A report contains the item it is about (for example the question and its test), your note if you write one, and the app version.

If you send it, we receive your email address and the message. We use them only to fix content, improve the app and reply to you. To count repeat reports, we keep a scrambled code made from your address (a salted hash), not the address itself, alongside the report text. We do not add you to any mailing list. The app itself keeps no copy of the reports you send.

Daily reminder (optional)

If you turn on the daily reminder, iOS asks for permission to show notifications. The reminder is scheduled on your phone (a local notification). No notification token or other data is sent to us or anyone else.

Ads (Google AdMob)

The free version of Baito shows ads from Google AdMob: a banner at the bottom of the browsing screens, a full-screen ad when you finish a test, before the results, and, only if you choose to watch one, a rewarded ad that earns an extra test. Ads never appear while you answer a question.

To show and measure ads, Google's software in the app collects information about your device and how ads are used, such as:

None of your study progress, answers, name or settings are given to Google.

Consent and tracking are your choice. If you are in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, Google's consent message asks first how your data may be used for ads; you can change your answer later in Settings > Privacy choices. Then iOS asks whether Baito may track your activity across other companies' apps and websites. If you allow it, Google can use your advertising identifier to show ads that are more relevant to you. If you ask the app not to track, the advertising identifier is not shared and you still see ads, just less tailored ones. You can change this any time in the iPhone's Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.

The app asks Google to keep ad content within a rating suited to the app's App Store age rating.

How Google uses this information is described at policies.google.com/privacy and policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

With Baito Pro, the app shows no ads and stops requesting them.

Baito Pro purchases and subscriptions (Apple and RevenueCat)

Baito Pro is available as a yearly or monthly subscription or as a one-time lifetime purchase. Payment is handled entirely by Apple through the App Store; we never see your payment details or your Apple Account.

To confirm and restore Baito Pro, the app uses a service called RevenueCat. When you open the Baito Pro screen, buy, subscribe or tap Restore purchase, and each time the app starts while you have a subscription (to check whether it has renewed), the app sends RevenueCat:

The anonymous ID is not your name, email or Apple Account, and we do not link it to you. RevenueCat does not receive your study progress or settings. If you never open the Baito Pro screen, buy, subscribe or restore, the app does not contact RevenueCat at all.

RevenueCat's privacy policy is at revenuecat.com/privacy. You can manage or cancel a subscription in your iPhone's Settings, under your name > Subscriptions.

Other information

The App Store itself may collect information about downloads, purchases and crashes under Apple's own policies. That is between you and Apple. Baito has no analytics or crash-reporting service of its own.

Permissions

Baito asks for a permission only when it needs it: the tracking question described above, notifications if you turn on the daily reminder, and the share sheet or file picker when you export or import a backup. It does not request contacts, location services, camera, photos, microphone or Health data.

Deleting your data

Children

Baito is made for teenagers and adults learning Japanese and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

Security

Your progress is held in your device's app-private storage and is protected by your device passcode, Face ID or Touch ID and by iOS's own file protection. It is never sent to a server of ours (the test server only learns which tests a random ID downloaded), so there is nothing of ours holding your progress that could be breached. The trade-off is that we cannot restore it for you if you lose your phone, so please keep a backup.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top and publish the revised version at this address.
